Among the many steps you can take to upgrade your kitchen, improving your kitchen cabinets is one of the best ways to add both functionality and value to the space. Here are just a few examples of some of the best ways you can enhance your kitchen cabinets:
- Make them taller:
A lot of homes have cabinets that do not extend all the way to the ceiling. All this does is create some dead space between the tops of the cabinets and the ceiling that will never get used. Not only does extending the height of your cabinets freshen the look of your space, but it is also a very practical improvement because it maximizes your use of the space you have available to you in your kitchen. You can extend your cabinets with pieces of wood that you paint to match the cabinets, and add matching trim where possible.
This works best with painted projects.
- Add molding or trim:
Are your cabinets just a little plain for your liking? You can always add some molding or trim to the doors or to the structures of the cabinets themselves. Make sure to use a strong adhesive, and finishing nails where appropriate.
- Paint them:
Never underestimate just how much of a difference a fresh coat of paint can make when you want to transform a space, especially in the kitchen. There are a lot of colors, styles and palettes that have grown to be quite outdated, so changing up the color patterns in your kitchen and painting over worn-down, faded cabinetry can be great. This is also true if you have wood finishes that are very old or outdated, such as the honey oak that was ubiquitous in the 1980s and ‘90s. Refinishing cabinetry can be a big pain, especially if you’re dealing with veneers, so it often makes more sense to just paint them instead.
- Add some lighting:
Under cabinet lighting can add quite a bit of aesthetic value to your kitchen, and also give you some much-needed lighting for when you’re preparing food on the countertops. LED lighting strips are generally going to be your best bet for this purpose—these kits are relatively inexpensive and can be picked up at any home improvement store.
- Add beadboard:
Beadboard is ideal for updating the doors of your cabinets. Put beadboard inside the trimmed-out area before you paint. It’s easy to cut, and pretty inexpensive to purchase. You can also put it around your kitchen island for a bit more visual appeal as well.
